 First, there was the Karate Kid. (Then a whole bunch of sequels and remakes.) Next, there was Cobra Kai. (And then a well-received video game adaptation called Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues.) Now, there's the latest installment in the crane-kicking, hard-striking franchise, a new mobile game dubbed Cobra Kai: Card Fighter.

Training Mr. Miyagi

Mr. Miyagi, played by Pat Morita, epitomizes the standard of wisdom, patience, and pure skill anyone should be so lucky to find in a teacher.

The performance netted Morita an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. There is no doubt that he was a great actor, but, ironically, the man who played a karate master had no martial arts training prior to taking his famous role.

So who was Mr. Miyagi's sensei? There was another man behind the scenes, coaching Morita on how to not only be a karate practitioner, but a teacher as well. His story is as intricate, poignant and inspiring as any film could be.

Darryl Vidal, 1983 All Valley Karate Champion

 After it was discovered that Daniel and Johnny had fixed the outcome of the 1983 All Valley Championship, Darryl Vidal was crowned champion and was later presented the All Valley trophy.

 (Above is a commemorative piece of artwork done by artist "letsbewater" of that trophy presentation.)

Remember, Bobby Brown had been disqualified already for illegal contact on Daniel leaving Darryl, who lost a close match to Johnny in the semi-finals, the only true champion.
