"Bai Fut Sow" or "Buddha Breathing"

(from Master Z's facebook page)

The "Bai Fut Sow" or "Buddha Breathing" exercise is a powerful Qigong practice that combines breath control, posture, and mental focus to cultivate internal energy. The triangle formation with the hands is a classic mudra, symbolizing balance, harmony, and unity.

The movement of drawing the hands towards the face and then pushing them forward, synchronized with the breath, creates a flowing motion that can help to:

- Cultivate internal energy (Chi)

- Balance the body's energy

- Strengthen the arms, shoulders, and core

- Calm the mind and focus the attention

Holding the horse stance while focusing on the breath is an excellent way to practice Qigong and build internal strength, stability, and awareness. By combining physical posture, breath control, and mental focus, practitioners can cultivate a deep sense of relaxation, balance, and inner peace.

Training in peace

(from Master Z's facebook page)

"Training in peace is actual training. It's being aware of your daily life and guarding your peace to conserve your energy. We often focus on physical resiliency, but neglect our minds and emotions. It's essential to train our minds and emotions to withstand life's chaos.

As a Kung Fu practitioner and teacher, I look at self-defense against physical attacks as very important. But I also look at attacks towards my peace as a more important defense. Defending my peace is crucial to maintaining my emotional and mental well-being.

Conserving your peace and emotional energy is crucial. If you see a wolf on your path, you wouldn't continue walking towards it. Similarly, if certain people or situations drain your energy, it's okay to take a different path.

I'm not saying avoid necessary tasks or responsibilities. However, preserving your peace of mind and energy is vital. If you don't, others may take from you.

Learning to sit in silence, what some call meditation, is a powerful practice of peace. It's in these moments of stillness that we can find clarity, calm, and inner strength. Silence allows us to tune into our thoughts, emotions, and surroundings, helping us navigate life's challenges with greater ease.

Training to say less and becoming more of an observer is also a path to peace. By choosing to listen more and speak less, we can avoid unnecessary conflicts, build stronger relationships, and conserve our energy.

Let's prioritize our peace, harmony, and inner balance. By doing so, we'll become more resilient, focused, and better equipped to handle life's challenges.”

Classical martial arts in MMA

(from Master Z's facebook page)

The evolution of martial arts in modern sports fighting is indeed fascinating. It's amusing to see how classical martial arts like Karate and Kung-Fu, once ridiculed or deemed "useless" by some, are now making a comeback in the arena.

The adaptability of fighters and the blending of different styles have led to a resurgence of interest in traditional martial arts. As I’ve mentioned before, once everyone got accustomed to the same moves, the classical techniques from Karate and Kung-Fu started to reappear, catching opponents off guard and scoring points.

This phenomenon highlights the importance of understanding the roots and principles of martial arts. Traditional martial arts like Karate, Kung-Fu, and Filipino martial arts, as well as Kenpo, offer a wealth of knowledge and techniques that can be adapted and applied in modern sports fighting.

The incorporation of classical martial arts techniques into modern fighting styles is a testament to the evolving nature of martial arts. As fighters continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what's possible, it's exciting to think about what other traditional techniques might be rediscovered and reimagined in the world of sports fighting.

4. Self-Discipline and Self-Control: The ability to regulate one's thoughts, emotions, and actions, and to stay committed to one's goals and values.

5. Positive Self-Talk and Affirmations: The practice of using positive and empowering language to build confidence, motivation, and self-esteem.

Developing Mental Toughness

1. Embracing Challenges: Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth, learning, and self-improvement.

2. Practicing Mindfulness and Meditation: Regularly practicing mindfulness and meditation to build mental clarity, focus, and resilience.

3. Building Self-Awareness: Developing a deep understanding of one's thoughts, emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.

4. Cultivating a Growth Mindset: Embracing a growth mindset, and viewing failures and setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning.

5. Surrounding Yourself with Positive Influences: Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive, and like-minded individuals who inspire and motivate you.

The Natural Way to Health

(from Pablo Zamora's Facebook page)

Healing yourself with nature's elements is a powerful approach to wellness. Sunshine, for instance, offers numerous benefits. Exposure to sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D in our skin, essential for bone health and immune function. Sunlight also boosts our mood by releasing serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Furthermore, natural sunlight helps regulate our internal clock, improving sleep quality and overall bodily functions.

Fresh air is another essential element for our well-being. Breathing in fresh air provides our cells with the oxygen they need to function properly, supporting energy production and overall health. Fresh air also helps remove toxins and pollutants from our lungs and body. Spending time outdoors, breathing fresh air, can even improve our mental clarity, focus, and concentration.

Grounding, also known as earthing, is a simple yet powerful practice that involves making direct contact with the Earth's surface. This helps balance our electrical charge, reducing inflammation and promoting relaxation. Grounding has been shown to decrease cortisol levels, heart rate, and blood pressure, all indicators of stress. Regular grounding practice can also help regulate our circadian rhythms, leading to better sleep quality and duration.

A plant-based diet is another crucial aspect of natural healing. Plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. A plant-based diet has been shown to reduce inflammation, a key contributor to chronic diseases. Additionally, plant-based foods are rich in fiber, which supports a healthy gut microbiome, essential for immune function and overall well-being. By incorporating these natural elements into your daily life, you'll be well on your way to promoting overall health, wellness, and vitality!

The Three Qualities of a Kung-Fu Student

(from Master Z's Facebook page)

HUMILITY, RESPECT & PATIENCE...

The Three Qualities of a Kung-Fu Student

In my time in learning Kung-fu I understood that I wasn't in just another sport or activity. I realized from the get-go that this is something very special that may not be suitable for just everyone. A good student will accept the fact that learning Kung-Fu requires the practice of the three qualities of a Kung-fu student. This is Humility, Respect and Patience. Kung-Fu translates to skill developed over a long period of training. In other words, "Hard Work!" If you are not humble, you will boast and brag and believe that you are more skilled than you truly are. This becomes like a virus that grows within you and doesn't allow you to learn and grow. When you are not humble you become negative and feel entitled. This is the worst place a student can get to. Trust me, I've seen it hundreds of times in Kung-Fu. The longer a student is training, the more that student learns, and the more that student feels he knows. But truth is, Kung-fu is an endless journey and you will be a student for life in Kung-Fu. A Sifu (Master) looks first at how humble a student is. How he behaves in class with his peers and his instructors. You can always tell if humility is being lost by the students attitude. When a student begins to expect more for less and takes offense to being guided. This is when that entitled attitude takes over and destroys the humility that feeds the other two qualities.

Respect is the brother of Humility. They both work together to develop the character of a Kung-Fu student. Learning Kung-Fu has a formula that has worked for thousands of years. This formula is guided by the culture and disciplines of the Kwoon (school).  If a student loses his humility he automatically also loses the respect. This respect is what guards his character and ultimately what keeps him listening, following and learning. Once respect is lost, the student will stop listening and will stop learning. If a student thinks he knows more than he truly does, he will shut off to the guidance of his older Kung-fu siblings and even his Sifu. You can see how humility and respect are bonded together and how they define the character of a Kung-fu student. As I remember it, when a student would lose himself in this virus of lack of humility and respect, a Sifu would have to humble them. Often times this would mean degrading them in front of their peers. This was the hard way if a student didn't want to change. Often, they would either humble themselves from this or quit. But it is what needs to happen if peace and harmony is to be kept in the kwoon.

The third quality is patience. We all know that in order to achieve any of these qualities, they must be practiced daily. No one is automatically patient. Patience comes from an understanding and an acceptance to the culture, discipline and philosophy of training in Kung-Fu. There is no fast road in Kung-fu. Everyone has to put in the time and learn to live the disciplines. If a student lacks patience, he will not accept the time and sacrifice that it truly takes to learn Kung-Fu. In Kung-Fu everything must be earned, and earning Kung-fu requires time under sacrifice. A Sifu will not accept into his circle any students that lack patience or the other two qualities. So if you ever hear a Sifu or an older Kung-Fu sibling say, "Check Your Attitude" ... this is a warning that one or more of the qualities is not being practiced by you or someone else in the class. This usually becomes a warning before the student is humbled directly. But this becomes the last resort as this act may work or may lose you that student.

Training

Training has to become a lifestyle. Martial arts can’t be a once in a while thing… it just will not work that way. It’s like trying to learn piano, but practicing every so often. This is an endeavor of skill development, physical and mental development as well. It goes way beyond just an activity or an exercise. It’s personal betterment at its fullest. When I hear moms sometimes say, Karate for my boy and dancing for my girl… sorry, but I have to cringe at that one. Martial arts is usable skills that are for the entire family. - Master Z

The advantages of a fit physique

(from Master Z's Facebook page)

I love the quote that has a photo of an iceberg sticking up and 70% of it under the water. A lot of people think that those as myself that have been lean and fit all our lives are somehow fortunate. Yes, I would agree, but as in acceptance of sacrifice and discipline. I had to work my butt off and continue to do so. A belief is a powerful thing that gets deeply entrenched in your mind and emotions. I totally believe and have believed since I was a kid… that a martial arts teacher must be lean, fit and skilled. Bruce Lee was always my inspiration so it was perfectly clear to me to take on the fight and stick with it lifelong... as all martial artist should do. Our life is an expression of self-discipline and self-control. We lead by our personal example as all good leaders.

With all the sacrifice that goes along in being lean and fit year round comes so many benefits. Being skilled is highly important, and more so than the latter. But looking the part makes your job simpler and more effective. It would be challenging for me if I was overweight and out of shape to speak about self-discipline, self-control, and commitment. Sure, I’ve written about this in the past and heard back all kinds of excuses as to why it’s tough for some to get lean and fit. Honestly, excuses should not be a part of a martial artists language. We live and teach about excellence and how to achieve that with sacrifice. Learning to accept, and actually enjoy the sacrifice is the only way. We’ve all seen videos of people with incredible handicaps achieving amazing things. Let’s keep that in mind when the disease of excusitis hits you.

Being lean and fit places you in a position of advantage in many ways. As soon as you walk into a room people notice you. Most people will admire your commitment and self-discipline. The other ones will envy you for it. It’s easier for them to believe what you do for a living by your appearance. People will listen more attentively when you speak about anything related to fitness, nutrition, health… discipline and like it or not, martial arts as well. Looking strong and fit is a look of power and that has an advantage of intimidating trouble makers. You will not look like a victim and will look much harder to deal with. But a big factor is the level of confidence that looking the part will have on you. Being lean and fit is like a double barrel shotgun in personal power. Skill is more important, but is not visible by everyone else. But when you combine it all you have what I like to consider an invisible Armour, shield and sword.

All Martial Arts are Effective

from Master Z's Facebook page

I admit I get fed up of hearing others put down certain arts and judge them on certain martial artists. I’ve heard Kung-Fu is not good for real combat. Listen, Kung-Fu is and was the fighting art of China. It is the father of Karate and has a history of thousands of years. There is history, yes… real history of Kung-Fu warriors who fought life and death in a daily basis. Not in a cage or a ring… I mean other warriors trying to defame and even kill them. This holds true to all classical arts though. There’s history of fighters from each art who lived their art and became heroes from their life. This holds true to every martial art system. To say that Krav Maga is bullshit is downright idiotic. If we’re talking the real Israeli Krav Maga as has been taught by the IDF for decades… we’re talking about what one of the toughest militaries in the world uses as their primary hand to hand combat system. Now, if it gets watered down to make it family friendly in today’s schools, that’s a different story. But a kick to the groin and a wedge hand the throat can be quite deadly in any situation.

How about hearing that grappling is ineffective in the street. I’m pretty sure a grappler is wise enough to realize that knowing how to strike is necessary. Relying on just ground fighting wouldn’t be so wise in a street situation. Just as not knowing how to grapple in a cage fight would be ridiculous. Situations differ and depending on your environment for real combat is what one will need to train in.  On a one to one fight, grappling skills is a great advantage. In a street situation, striking and kicking… and possibly running is primary. To say that a certain martial art is not effective based on a person or a group of people who are under skilled is unjust. You can take a skilled fighter and train them with skills from any martial art… specially the arts that others call ineffective, and they will apply those skills effectively. We see that in the cage with fighters who use techniques from Kung-Fu, Karate, and other arts. It’s never the art that’s ineffective it’s the person applying them. I truly believe that a warrior athlete can train in any art form and be able to use it effectively. Proving that it’s not the art, but the artist.

Stay positive, respectful, and admire one another for the discipline and commitment. As martial artists we’re all in the same journey of personal betterment.

The Mastery Journey

The road to Mastery requires total effort in the face of challenges. A good example is the giant redwood trees. If you walk through a grove of these trees shortly after a rainstorm at sunset, you will experience a beauty that cannot be shared in words. It's only in quiet reflection that you become aware of the thousands of years that these trees have endured storms, fires, and floods. It is this same level of perseverance that gets a student to Mastery Level. The road to Martial Arts Mastery is filled with goals that initially seem impossible to reach. But those who endure will reap the rewards of Kung-Fu.

“Like anything worthwhile in life... you have to place effort to attain it and to hold on to it. It's all in the Mastery Journey."

Discomfort and Pain... the sacrifice in training - by Pablo Zamora

As true martial artist we learn to adapt to the rigors of training. If it was easy, everyone would be a “true martial artist.” While many people play the martial arts, and the serious learn to accept and even to enjoy the sacrifice of discomfort and pain. The real essence of the martial arts is to develop toughness in its practitioners. This level of toughness is a combination of physical and mental toughness. There’s no way around this. Learning to endure, and actually learning to accept and expect it. Because without it, one will never become the real deal. That’s just truth and reality.
Sadly through time the martial arts have soften so much in order to keep people involved in it. Learning toughness is no longer as important as it is to keep students by entertaining them with fun and excitement. Old school mentality in training is about developing strong students in body and mind. This still happens in certain schools that have a real dojo culture. Teaching students from the get-go, that discomfort and even pain will be a part of the process of developing skills. Making sure that parents also understand that even children will be taught to endure.
This is what makes the martial arts, and I mean, the true martial arts such a gem. There’s no possible way to develop warriors without this process. The magic that great schools do is to create a culture that sees the enduring of discomfort and pain as a great accomplishment. Students are rewarded with praise for this level of sacrifice. Praise from their instructors and peers is an incredible reward to receive. This praise becomes even stronger when the parents, siblings and other family members join in. It really is a process unlike anything else. To witness students turning into martial arts warriors is a reward like nothing else.

Why Train in Classical Weapons? - by Pablo Zamora

Today it seems that everyone looks at the martial arts at its practicality in defense. But there is another side to training in the martial arts that goes far beyond just self defense. Take training in classical martial arts weapons. Why learn these ancient combat tools that have no real use today? It’s important to fully understand the benefits of training classical weapons. Every weapon that you learn expands your knowledge and skills. Everything doesn’t have to be about practicality in combat. The skills that are gained are of hand and eye coordination, balance, strength, speed, focus... and the list goes on. If one thinks empty hands is challenging in the martial arts, they should take a closer look at weapons. It is raising the bar in skills development. Truth is that many of the classical weapons will still give a person an edge in combat efficiency. Learning to use a staff, sword, or other weapons can be practical in use if you have a long or short stick available. How about the flexible weapons like the Nunchakus? Then you will have the skill to use a belt with a buckle or anything flexible as a weapon for defense. I can go on and on on how these skills can be transferred to modern day usage. Realize that anything that challenges physically and mentally in learning will expand you and sharpen you as a better martial artist. Strong & Inspired. - Master Z

Age is not a barrier, it's a limitation you put on your mind

Don't allow being 40, 50, 60 or even 70 or above to stop you from becoming the best that you can become.
I made a decision a long time ago, and committed my heart and soul to it. This decision was that like wine, I would get better with age. No excuses of pain, injuries, challenges, family, work, etc. I would not let myself down by allowing age to deter me from being at my very best!
What ages us? If you allow yourself to feel old... you will feel it, look it and live it! But if you make a life decision to get lean, fit and healthy, and stay that way from this point on... you will change the course of your life forever! Is it easy? heck no! It's tough... but well worth the sacrifice!
I made a strict life rule to myself: I will train and eat in such a way that no matter what hour, day, week, month or year it is... I can take my shirt off and look my best! You see, bodybuilders and fitness models have on seasons and off seasons. They peak for photo shoots or contests. They don't always look at their best. So the photos or videos you see is their peaked condition. My rule was and is to look the part all the time! No... being 60 years old can't be an excuse. Plus, I have to adhere to the No Excuses until the day I die!
You can make the same commitment as well. Choose to be Lean, Fit and healthy for Life and don't use your age as a barrier!

Why Kung-Fu?

(from Pablo Zamora's Facebook page)

Classical Kung-Fu is not easy. It pushes your body to levels most are not willing to go. In my Masters Club Class I teach traditional Wah Lum style of Kung-Fu. This system is very challenging. But that’s not to say that others are simple. I found out that if let go of my Kung-Fu I lose flexibility, and a lot more. My technique ability in my other skills suffer. It’s quite amazing. I see it for mys...elf. I see practitioners that stop training in KungFu and focus more on practical combative systems... Wow, they become tighter and they lose that technique edge that training in this can give. One thing for sure is that the fitness one gets from it differs from other types of fitness. Training in low stances, kicking high, moving with speed, grace and power in empty hand and weapon forms truly does get one’s body to a different level. I have done Kung- Fu all my life. I brought it here to the RGV ... I was the first Kung fu school. This was 36 years ago. I also brought in Krav Maga 20 years ago. I didn’t learn Krav Maga for myself, it was more for the need of the people in my community. Krav Maga is very simple and it’s great for the masses as anyone can do it. For myself I rely more on Bruce Lee’s JKD for combat and Kung- Fu for my physical challenge and wellness. Kung fu to me is one of the oldest forms of personal development. Bruce Lee created his JKD from Kung-fu. It was his training and his passion that inspired him to expand classical Wing Chun Kung Fu to JKD.
