Sean Kanan filmed Karate Kid 3 with surgical staples still in his stomach

(fortressofsolitude.co.za 6-14-26)

Sean Kanan was just honoured at the Martial Arts History Museum for his contributions to martial arts and Hollywood — but the actor nearly didn’t make it to the set of the film that started it all.

In the last two seasons of Cobra Kai, we saw a reformed Mike Barnes, now working at a furniture store and focusing on leaving his bullying days behind. It was a wholesome turn that turned “The Bad Boy of Karate” into a truly endearing character, and it couldn’t have happened without Sean Kanan’s heartfelt performance. Still, fans could have seen a very different take on Mike in 1989, as Kanan came dangerously close to losing his life before Karate Kid Part III made its theatrical debut.

In an interview with Taboo’s Comics & Kicks, the actor spoke about how he almost died before he became famous.

Kanan had been practicing martial arts for months in preparation for his role as Mike in The Karate Kid, Part III. He also insisted on doing his own stunts in the movie. Unsurprisingly, after pushing his body to the limit, the budding actor began to notice some discomfort in his upper thigh. Still, the pain wasn’t severe – yet – and Kanan pushed through to meet the production’s strict deadlines. “We’d been filming about 2 weeks and we broke for Christmas, and I was having some pretty significant pain in my upper left thigh. You know, I figured it was from all the martial arts I was doing, so I was taking a lot of aspirin,” he said in the interview.

On Christmas Day, 1988, things took a turn for the worse. “So, Christmas Day, 1988, while most people were getting ready to spend the holidays with their family, I was bleeding to death in an emergency room,” The Karate Kid star explained. Kanan passed out and was rushed to the hospital in Las Vegas. The doctors noticed that Kanan had ruptured his omentum (the layer of tissue protecting abdominal organs), and the bleeding was pooling onto his femoral artery.

To make matters worse, Kanan had been using aspirin to ease the pain, unaware that the pill was actually making his blood thinner and worsening his condition. Doctors had to operate – and they had to do it immediately. “As they were about to put me under, I looked at the doctor, and then I said, “Tell me one more thing.” I said, “Tell me you’re good.” And he goes, “Don’t worry, don’t worry.” I grabbed him. I go, “Tell me you’re good.” He goes, “I’m good,” Kanan continued.

Doctors told Kanan before he went under that there was a chance that they couldn’t save his life. “I woke up, had a 15-in wound on my abdomen, surgical staples. There was They couldn’t get me a private room, and there was a guy in the bed next to me. He died the next day, and I was like, “That’s not a good omen,” he explains in the interview.

Fortunately, the actor survived the life-threatening condition and was soon recuperating from having his abdomen cut open. Worried about the film’s production, he called the team to inform them, but he didn’t exactly get cards or warm wishes from the producers. “John Avildsen called me, and he basically said, “You got 2 weeks to come back to set, or we’re going to hire Brandon Lee.” I got pissed off.”

They gave him an ultimatum: he had to be back on set in ten days, or they would replace him with Brandon Lee, son of the legendary Bruce Lee. The heat was on, and Kanan wasn’t about to give up; this was his breakout role, and he would not miss the chance, even if he had lost 30 pounds of muscle mass from the ordeal. “I had them discharge me against medical advice,” he explained.

Kanan was back on set before the deadline, ready to film the final tournament scenes with Ralph Macchio. In a real show of Hollywood recklessness, the actor still had his surgical wounds for the shoot. Years later, Kanan would joke about the terrifying reality of fighting with surgical staples holding his stomach together: “It was a good thing that my karate gi was black – because if it were white, you would have seen me bleeding through it.”

In the end, Sean Kanan completed the shot flawlessly, staples still intact, and became part of the ever-growing legacy of The Karate Kid. Cobra Kai gave his character a shot at redemption, and given everything the actor sacrificed just to be on set, he earned every second of his time back in the spotlight. “At 22 years old, it revealed a part of my character that I didn’t know I had. You know, basically, when push came to shove, my back was against the wall, I chose to fight,” Kanan said proudly. “Over the years, when I’ve dealt with stuff that’s been difficult, I’m like, “Well, you know, is it as difficult as being told that you might not live? Then, you know, buck up, buttercup.”

Kanan isn’t slowing down. In April 2026, he and his wife Michele Kanan announced a multi-picture deal between their production company Flip Creative Media and UK-based sales agency High Fliers Films. The agreement covers worldwide rights to completed action film Bodyman and upcoming thriller Final Judgement — a strong signal that the man who bled through a black gi to keep his breakout role is still very much in the fight.

(Billy Zabka news!) - Scarpetta Season 2 cast: Meet the nine stars joining Nicole Kidman’s series

(from prestigeonline.com)

Scarpetta season 1 wrapped up in March 2026, and its cliffhanger ending has left fans with plenty of unanswered questions. Fortunately, the show is set to be back for a second season to unravel bigger mysteries with Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bobby Cannavale and Simon Baker as returning cast members. While Kidman will once again step into her role as Dr Kay, the chief medical examiner and protagonist of Patricia Cornwell’s book series, the season 2 cast also has some new additions to take on supporting roles.

Despite being a tightly produced, eight-episode outing, Scarpetta season 1 was packed with multiple timelines and subplots that left viewers hooked from the get-go. After the pilot season followed the events from Cornwell’s Postmortem (1990) and Autopsy (2021) novels, the season 2 storyline aims to get even murkier with the adaptation of Cruel and Unusual (1993) and The Body Farm (1994), as per reports.

Developed and written for television by Liz Sarnoff, the upcoming season went into production in Nashville shortly after the premiere of the first season, which recorded a whopping 11. 34 million viewership within a month. In the hopes of making an even bigger comeback, the second season infuses ample star power with the likes of David Arquette and Holland Taylor coming on board. Tentatively slated for a 2027 release, here’s everything to know about Scarpetta season 2, including its new and recurring cast members.

The full Scarpetta season 2 cast: New additions and returning members

-Returning cast-

Nicole Kidman (Dr. Kay Scarpetta)

Jamie Lee Curtis (Dorothy Farinelli)

Bobby Cannavale (Detective Pete Marino)

Simon Baker (Benton Wesley)

Ariana DeBose (Lucy)

Rosy McEwen (Younger Dr Kay)

Amanda Righetti (Younger Dorothy)

Jake Cannavale (Younger Detective Pete Marino)

Hunter Parrish (Younger Benton Wesley)

-New cast-

David Arquette - Widely considered a horror icon, primarily due to his role as Dewey Riley in the Scream franchise, David Arquette will now appear in Scarpetta season 2. After starring in Scream 7, which released earlier this year, the actor also wrapped up the filming of Evil Genius, alongside Patricia Arquette and David Harbour.

Jodi Balfour - After playing President Ellen Wilson on Apple’s For All Mankind and appearing in Ted Lasso season 3, Jodi Balfour has bagged a recurring role in season 2 of Scarpetta. Balfour first rose to fame through her acclaimed role as Gladys Witham in the Canadian drama series Bomb Girls (2012–2013).

Holland Taylor - Holland Taylor is best known for playing intimidating characters in shows such as Two and a Half Men, The Practice and The Morning Show. Now, the Emmy-winning actress is expected to bring her signature acting chops to the Prime Video series in the upcoming season.

William Zabka - If you happen to hear the phrase “no nercy” in season 2, don’t be too surprised, given that Karate Kid and Cobra Kai fame, William Zabka, takes on a new role in the show. Whether Zabka will play a grey character like Johnny Lawrence from his 1984 hit or take on a positive role is left to see.

Stella Baker - It’s going to be a family affair for the Baker clan, considering Simon Baker will be joined by his daughter Stella Baker in the second season. Stella, who has famously appeared in Republic of Sarah and also guest-starred in the final season of The Mentalist, will now star in Scarpetta. It will be interesting to see if the father-daughter duo get to share screen space in the series.

Kim Dickens - Deadwood star Kim Dickens also steps into the world of Scarpetta with the new season. Previously, she had recurring roles on sitcoms like Lost (2004-2010) and Friday Night Lights (2006-2011). More recently, she appeared in Jessica Biel’s thriller series, The Better Sister.

Troy Garity - Troy Garity is yet another new addition to the cast. Some of Garity’s notable past credits include the Danny Boyle sci-fi thriller Sunshine, Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad and the critically acclaimed television series Boss, directed by Gus Van Sant. He is also best known for playing Isaac in the Barbershop franchise.

Jerod Haynes - Jerod Haynes, whose acting credits include Benji, Southside with You, Native Son, Sense8, and The Village, also joins Scarpetta season 2.

Michael “Killer Mike” Render - Grammy-winning rapper Michael “Killer Mike” Render, who bagged his first major acting role in FX’s The Lowdown, is set to record another memorable TV role with Scarpetta season 2.

Tanner Buchanan Explains How ‘Cobra Kai’ Changed His Fitness Mindset Along With Strong Nation (Exclusive)

(hollywoodlife.com 10-27-25)

Cobra Kai came to an end earlier this year, but Tanner Buchanan is holding the memories he made and his acquired martial arts skills close to his heart. In an exclusive interview with Hollywood Life, the 26-year-old actor shared that he keeps in shape through the high-intensity, boot camp-style group exercise course STRONG Nation.

“What I like about it is you can kind of do it anywhere,” Tanner said while explaining how the exercise program fits into his work schedule. “If you can’t make it to a class, I know that they have some classes online that you can always take. And funny enough, with my career, I travel so much, and, and I’m not able to get to the gym a lot, which is not a great thing for me, as I usually have to stay in shape quite a bit.”

Tanner is no stranger to fitness. On Cobra Kai, he played Robby Keene for all six seasons. He began with almost no martial arts experience — which he jokingly called “non-existent” — but ended up performing “95 percent” of his own stunts in the final season, he told Hollywood Life. Tanner also finished the show with lifelong friendships, calling Ralph Macchio and William Zabka the “adopted dads” of the younger cast members. And as fans know, Tanner is engaged to co-star Mary Mouser.

While recollecting his favorite emotional Cobra Kai scene, Tanner recalled Robby’s tearful season 6 locker room conversation with his dad, Johnny (played by William), as the character reflects how karate changed his life.

“I remember that last moment … I was crying and getting emotional just because I knew it was that one last scene [before the show ended],” Tanner recalled. “And I do remember a sweet moment from Billy when he hugged me in the scene. And then, when they called ‘Cut,’ he kind of gave me like a little kiss on the forehead, and he was like, ‘First off, that was amazing. Second off, this has been such an amazing experience to be able to share with you.’ So, then I had to pull it back together, and I was like, ‘No, no, no, I can’t cry anymore.'”

An actor’s lifestyle comes with a hectic itinerary, so Tanner chose STRONG Nation to help him stay fit. The course provides students with a combination of body weight, muscle conditioning, cardio and plyometric training synced to original music reverse engineered to match every move, which Tanner noted “keeps your mind off actually working out.”

The intense course promises a calorie-burning experience along with toning arms, legs, abs and glutes. STRONG Nation differs from other exercise courses through its relationship of moving in sync to the music, which includes fast-paced rhythms such as EDM, techno, house, drum, dubstep hip-hop and fusion genres. As a result, students stay focused on their moves rather than tediously counting each rep. While moves like burpees, squats and lunges can seem daunting, STRONG Nation partnered with some of the most famous music producers, including Timbaland, Krewella and Steve Aoki, to make sure students can enjoy their workout while working up a sweat.

Since the STRONG Nation program works with Tanner’s schedule, he can focus on upcoming projects, such as his role in the upcoming supernatural horror Hide and Don’t Speak. The film follows six teens that “play a terrifying viral Japanese game in which the players summon a vengeful spirit for a deadly round of hide-and-seek,” according to its synopsis.

“It’s definitely a horror that I was surprised no one had even done yet,” Tanner teased, adding that the film will “get your heart pumping, that’s for sure.”

Cobra Kai costars Mary Mouser and Tanner Buchanan are engaged: 'Such a special moment'

(ew.com February 14, 2025)

Cobra Kai may be ending, but it's just the beginning for costars Mary Mouser and Tanner Buchanan.

The actors announced that they're engaged to be married in joint Instagram post Thursday, adding, "This is such a special moment in our lives, the closing of one chapter and celebrating the continuation of another. We're so grateful for the love and support, and though we're partial to having our private moments, we're excited to share this check-in to our world."

The announcement confirmed fan speculation that has been raging for years over the pair's offscreen relationship. Mouser, 28, and Buchanan, 26, have been castmates on all six seasons of Cobra Kai. Their characters in the Karate Kid sequel series — Sam "Bonsai Badass" LaRusso and martial arts prodigy Robby Keene — started dating in season 2 but subsequently broke up. Meanwhile, the actors have been spotted in public together on several occasions.

In 2022, Buchanan and Mouser shared photos from Disneyland Paris in which they donned matching outfits. But they waited until this week to publicly confirm their relationship.

Buchanan told PEOPLE at a series finale event Wednesday that Mouser was "a hundred percent" his closest confidante on the series, adding, "But to be honest, literally everybody… There's not one person that we don't hang out with and have fun with, and we truly keep saying that we're going to be around in each other's lives forever."

Cobra Kai premiered on YouTube Red in 2018 and later moved to Netflix. When the show was renewed for a sixth season in 2023, the streamer announced it would be the swan song.

Creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg wrote in a letter to fans, "Reacquainting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor… This fandom is the BEST on the planet and we hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories with you down the line."

Cobra Kai star Courtney Henggeler quits acting after 20 years in the business: 'We survived off the crumbs'

(ew.com April 14, 2025)

Cobra Kai star Courtney Henggeler is throwing in the towel on acting.

"After 20-plus years of fighting the good fight in the acting business, I hung up my gloves on Friday. I called my agents and told them I was tapping out. I no longer wanted to be a cog in the wheel of the machine,” Henggeler wrote in a lengthy post on her Substack account that she shared on her official Instagram.

Though she didn't specify what her next steps would be, she did share that she told her agents, "I want to be the machine" instead. She continued, "All I’ve ever known in my professional life was acting. But not even the art or craft of acting. All I’ve truly ever knew was the hustle. The hustle, the grind, sprinkled occasionally with the odd acting job. Perhaps a line or two to TV’s Dr. House - 'Sorry' (that’s it. That was my line. Genius). Nailed it. Or a recurring guest-star that never seemed to recur….Whatever the opposite of nailing it is."

Though she is best known for playing Amanda LaRusso in all six seasons of Cobra Kai, prior to that, Henggeler had small roles in Jane the Virgin, Working Class, Bones, Henry Danger, Royal Pains, Mom, NCIS, Criminal Minds, and The Big Bang Theory. On the film side, she also appeared in Friends with Benefits, Nobody's Fool, and Feed.

But, ultimately, after each job, Henggeler found it was "back to the grind," which left her feeling hungry. "We survived off the crumbs. We filled our cup with the possibility; our mugs with delusion. Our plates were empty, but a golden goose hung over our heads. Today might be the day. Today might be the day I reach the golden goose," she wrote.

Henggeler's announcement came on the heels of Netflix's decision to end Cobra Kai with its sixth and final season, which debuted on the streamer in February.

With the success and consistent work coming from Cobra Kai, Henggeler knew she was finally considered "one of the lucky ones," but she still found herself "famished" by it all. "I was on a series. A successful series. I made money. My face was on the billboards I longed for 20 plus years. I was directed by George Clooney for godsakes. This by all definitions is the golden goose," she shared.

Henggeler continued, "For years I silenced the voice in my head, begging me to walk away. The voice, the constant gnawing. Not because of the acting itself. But because of the gauntlet I had to run to reach the acting. What once felt necessary, something I willingly participated, even celebrated, became stifling."

She concluded her post with a series of rhetorical questions that suggested she's found peace with her decision to step away from acting: "What if we choose to believe we have the power? What if we had it all along? ... What if we never needed to run the gauntlet? What if we are the gauntlet?"

‘Cobra Kai’ Star Alicia Hannah-Kim Speaks Out on Martin Kove Biting Her: “This Was a Serious Incident”

(thehollywoodreporter.com 6-20-25)

Alicia Hannah-Kim is publicly speaking out after her Cobra Kai co-star Martin Kove apologized for biting her arm at a fan convention.

In an Instagram video shared Sunday, Hannah-Kim thanked everyone for their support before diving into the “serious incident.“

“No one wants to be attacked at work or anywhere really. And I don’t think anybody would think this is normal or warranted or acceptable,” she said.

She added, “I just think that when you are confronted with something like this, it’s good to stand up for yourself. It’s an important choice to make. I think it’s the good choice to make. I also want to express that this does not represent my experience with the show at large. I think everybody can tell that it’s a really good vibe and a great cast. And everybody else is delightful. I don’t want this to affect your love for the show. Feel free to love on it as hard as you want.”

According to an incident report filed by a Puyallup police officer and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, the biting occurred after Hannah-Kim approached her former co-star Kove at Washington State’s Summer Con in Puyallup last week and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.

“When Alicia did this, Martin Kove suddenly grabbed her arm and bit her upper arm so hard it nearly drew blood, and she yelled out in pain. Once Martin Kove finished biting her arm, he grabbed her arm again and began kissing it where he had bit her (Alicia had a very noticeable bite mark on her arm that was already turning blue and bruising),” the report states.

When Kove was confronted about the assault by Hannah-Kim and her husband, the report states that Kove “exploded on them, saying something to the effect of how dare they confront him, and he did not do anything wrong.” Kove later admitted to bitting Hannah-Kim, but said “he thought he was being funny.”

Kove has since issued a public apology to his co-star. “I deeply regret and apologize for my actions regarding the incident with Alicia (Hannah-Kim), a genuinely kind and wonderful person who didn’t deserve to be put in this position,” Kove said in a statement to TMZ, sent from Jaffe & Co. Crisis Management. “I’ve always respected her and considered her a highly professional and talented co-worker on Cobra Kai. I was being playful in the moment but went too far and there is absolutely no excuse for my behavior. I regret my actions for which I take full responsibility for what I did, and again I apologize to her and her husband. I’m committed to learning from this and it will never happen again.”

During the fifth and sixth seasons of Cobra Kai, Hannah-Kim portrayed Kim Da-Eun. Meanwhile, Kove reprised his role as John Kreese — the antagonist from the 1984 film The Karate Kid — in the Netflix spinoff series.

New book by Darryl Vidal - The Crane and the Grandmaster

The Crane and the Grandmaster is a unique blend of martial arts philosophy, personal journey, and behind-the-scenes storytelling from one of the most beloved films of the 1980s, the Karate Kid.

As a lifelong martial artist and grandmaster, my experiences span decades of training, competition, and instruction. However, an unexpected turn in my journey led to my being featured in The Karate Kid, where I performed in the legendary tournament scenes and doubled for Pat Morita in the film's iconic crane technique moment. A fact that was not credited or publicized for decades.

This book chronicles my evolution from a young Kenpo Karate student to a martial arts master, offering a perspective that intertwines discipline, philosophy, and the pursuit of mastery.

It provides an insider's look at The Karate Kid-the making of the fight sequences, my interactions with the cast, and the lasting impact of the film on martial arts and pop culture. More than just a memoir, The Crane and the Grandmaster details my exploration of Eastern philosophies contrasted by my studies in science and religion. It explores deeper lessons of martial arts that are only experienced through generations of teaching: from humility and perseverance to the balance of ego and wisdom.

Cobra Kai's Final Karate Kid Cameo Explained

(screenrant.com 2-14-25)

In what was one of the show's most surprising cameos, Cobra Kai season 6 part 3 brought back Daryl Vidal, a character who hasn't been since The Karate Kid in 1984. Cobra Kai has made a tradition out of featuring at least one additional character from the Karate Kid movies, so there was naturally an expectation that the show's final season would follow this trend. Based on the fact that the franchise had few characters left to reintroduce ahead of Cobra Kai's final stretch, much of the speculation regarding who could fill that role revolved around Hilary Swank's Julie Pierce, but the series ultimately chose a different course.

Rather than go with the biggest name still missing from Cobra Kai, the series featured not one, but two lesser-known characters from the films. The second segment of season 6 saw William Christopher Ford reprise his role as Dennis de Guzman, one of Terry Silver's henchmen from The Karate Kid Part III. For its final five episodes, the show went with an even more obscure character in Darryl Vidal, a competitor from the 1984 All-Valley Karate Tournament.

During the Sekai Taikai finals in Cobra Kai season 6 part 3, a character introduced as "Darryl Vidal" was brought on stage to serve as the referee. In universe, the decision was made to honor his status as the champion of the 1981 All Valley Karate Tournament, but as a brief flashback made clear, Darryl Vidal's importance goes beyond that. Although a minor character in the film, Vidal did serve an important purpose, in that he was the tournament participant that Johnny had to overcome in order to face Daniel in the finals.

Having bested a pair of Kreese's students with relative ease in the preliminary rounds, Vidal presented himself as a formidable fighter in the preliminary rounds. Stated by the announcer to be a student of the Locust Valley Karate Club, Vidal advanced to the semifinals, but didn't prove to be much of a challenge to Johnny. Vidal lost without scoring a point, and was therefore eliminated.

Losing to Johnny in the semifinals the extent of Vidal's significance to the film itself, but it wasn't necessarily his loss that made his cameo in the show seem so fitting; rather, it was the backstory crafted for him by Cobra Kai years before his return. Vidal has been brought up on multiple occasions when Bobby, Kreese, and Johnny reminisce about the All Valley. As it turns out, Vidal had at least two years of experience fighting Cobra Kai prior to the movie's story. In that time, he had fought Johnny, Tommy, and Bobby.

According to Kreese, Vidal was a "very skilled" fighter, so much that he actually beat Johnny in the quarterfinals of the 1981 tournament. However, the effort that Johnny put into the fight, despite being well below Vidal's level at that time, convinced Kreese that Johnny was "the real deal." As Kreese told Robby, Vidal was a "three-degree black belt," whereas Johnny had only recently been taken under Kreese's wing.

In that respect, Darryl Vidal played a crucial role in Johnny's development as a fighter, as that loss helped Kreese recognize his potential. Kreese has always been adamant about Johnny being the best student he ever had, and the amount of dedication he put into training him can in turn be traced back to this particular moment. It notably had an equal impact on Johnny, because Kreese said that he could tell that Johnny wouldn't allow such a defeat to happen again. Evidently, the loss served as motivation for Johnny, and may have been what prompted his back-to-back titles.

Darryl Vidal is a confirmed participant in three iterations of the All-Valley Karate Tournament in The Karate Kid: 1981, 1983, and 1984. It's unclear if he competed at all in 1982 when Johnny won his first of two championships. After beating Johnny during the latter's first year of competitive fighting, he went on to win it all, taking home the 1981 title. It's possible that he fought in 1982, but if he did, he obviously fell short of repeating. As for the 1983 tournament, it's known from the episode that reunited Johnny with his friends from The Karate Kid that Vidal was beaten by Tommy in the seminars. Based on the way Johnny explained it, Vidal was the expected winner.

A newspaper article from season 3 established that immediately after his loss, Vidal took place in a match to decide the 3rd place winner. Here, he lost to Bobby, who had lost his semifinals match to Johnny. Presumably, his return to the semifinals in the 1984 tournament marked the end of his competitive journey. From the looks of things, he was never able to recapture the glory he was able to achieve in 1981, with all three of his known defeats coming at the hands of Cobra Kai.

Interestingly, the Darryl Vidal character shares his name with the actor who plays him. The 1984 movie credited him as "Karate Semifinalist," but both the announcer and the tournament bracket provided his real name. Vidal also worked on the film in another capacity, specifically as a stunt double for Pat Morita during some of Mr. Miyagi's action scenes. The bit role of Johnny's semifinal opponent and the body double work made sense for Vidal, considering that he had no prior acting credits, but was sufficiently skilled in martial arts.

Having had only one acting role between The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai season 6 part 3, Darryl Vidal ultimately never developed an acting career, and focused more on being a martial arts instructor. But due to his small yet meaningful connection to The Karate Kid universe, it was fitting that Vidal be brought back for a cameo in some form. And though Vidal didn't feature heavily in the show, he did receive the distinction of being the show's final returning character from The Karate Kid movies.

Chad McQueen, "the Karate Kid" Star and Steve McQueen's Son, Dies at 63

(variety.com)

Chad McQueen, son of the legendary actor Steve McQueen who played “Dutch” in “The Karate Kid” film series, died Wednesday in Palm Springs. He was 63.

His wife Jeanie and his children Chase and Madison said in a statement to Variety, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our father, Chad McQueen. His remarkable journey as a loving father to us, along with his unwavering commitment to our mother, truly exemplified a life filled with love and dedication,” reads the statement. “His passion for racing not only highlighted his exceptional talent but also served as a way to honor his father’s legacy, a testament to the values instilled in him.”

It continues: “He passed his passion, knowledge and dedication down to us, and we will continue not only his legacy but our grandfather’s as well. As a family, we need to navigate this difficult time, and we kindly ask for privacy as we remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.”

McQueen is best known for his role as “Dutch” in “The Karate Kid” (1984) and its sequel, “The Karate Kid Part II” (1986). His portrayal of one of the Cobra Kai members was iconic in ’80s pop culture. His character, in particular, exhibited a merciless attitude and encouraged Johnny Lawrence (played by William “Billy” Zabka) to brutally beat up Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) during the night of the Halloween dance.

His character also mocks and threatens the New Jersey native before the All-Valley Tournament. During the second season of the TV series “Cobra Kai,” it is revealed that Dutch has been serving time in prison. Though there were talks of McQueen potentially appearing in the show, scheduling issues reportedly prevented it.

Although he would continue to appear in other films, such as “New York Cop” (1993) and “Red Line” (1995), his film career was not as extensive as his father’s. Following in his father’s footsteps, however, McQueen had a successful career in auto racing, his true passion. He competed professionally in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring and founded McQueen Racing, a company that develops high-performance cars and motorcycles, continuing the family legacy of passion for automobiles.

In 2006, McQueen suffered a near-fatal crash while practicing for the Daytona International Speedway’s Rolex 24 event. Though he eventually pulled through, the crash effectively ended his professional racing career, but he has remained involved in motorsports through his company and other ventures.

Sensei Fumio Demura

from the Century Martial Arts Facebook page

We are heartbroken to hear about the passing of Sensei Fumio Demura..

Fumio was known as “The Real Miyagi”. He was an inspiration for the character in Karate Kid, and even served as Pat Morita’s stunt double in the films. He was also well-versed in Japanese karate. In the 60’s, Fumio moved to America and became one of the first true teachers of Shito-Ryu karate and Okianawan kobudo. His legacy will continue to live on and inspire martial artists all over the world.

Rest in Peace, Fumio Demura.

‘More Than Miyagi’ Docu Tells the Incredible Story of the Late ‘Karate Kid’ Star Pat Morita

(by Scott Fishman tvinsider.com)

Netflix’s smash hit Cobra Kai has some familiar faces from The Karate Kid — the decades-old film franchise on which the spinoff series is based — including former teen champ Daniel LaRusso and his rival Johnny Lawrence.

But one notable absence: sensei Mr. Miyagi, played by Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, who played the mentor and moral compass for “Daniel-san,” and who passed away in 2005.

But an upcoming documentary is here to fill the “wax on/wax off” void. More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story, from director Kevin Derek, aims to give a complete look at the life of the actor, whose wide-ranging credits also included Happy Days and Mulan.

Among those who give interviews and chat about the Oscar-nominated star: His Karate Kid costars Macchio and Zabka, plus Henry Winkler, James Hong, Marion Ross, Don Most, and many others. (Hilary Swank, who starred in The Next Karate Kid, “wanted to do it but didn’t have the time,” reveals Derek.)

The most revealing interview, however, comes courtesy of Morita’s widow, Evelyn Guerrero, who opens up about her husband’s struggles with alcoholism.

“The one thing I didn’t know was the amount he drank. I didn’t know how severe it was,” says Derek, who adds that it began to affect the actor in his later years.

The doc also delves into Morita’s childhood in California, where he spent nine years, starting at age 2, in hospitals with spinal tuberculosis. The condition meant being stuck in a full-body cast from shoulders to knees until the youngster survived an experimental procedure to walk again. He overcame this miraculous hurdle in the midst of World War II. But the Japanese-American was then transferred to an internment camp.

“He endured a lot and been through so much and rose above it and took on one of the most iconic roles in cinema history. It’s unbelievable,” Derek added.

The director has somewhat of a personal connection to Morita. “I’ve studied karate my entire life,” says Derek. His longtime instructor was Fumio Demura, Morita’s stunt double in the Karate Kid movies and the subject of Derek’s 2015 Netflix doc The Real Miyagi. He met Morita “before he had done any Karate Kid films. He seemed like such a genuine person.”

The meeting left an indelible impression on Derek, who hopes audiences walk away from More Than Miyagi knowing that Morita was…well more than Miyagi. He was a survivor, a family man and a pioneer for Asian Americans in Hollywood.

Training Mr. Miyagi

 Black Belt Magazine 9-16-20

Mr. Miyagi, played by Pat Morita, epitomizes the standard of wisdom, patience, and pure skill anyone should be so lucky to find in a teacher.

The performance netted Morita an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. There is no doubt that he was a great actor, but, ironically, the man who played a karate master had no martial arts training prior to taking his famous role.

So who was Mr. Miyagi's sensei? There was another man behind the scenes, coaching Morita on how to not only be a karate practitioner, but a teacher as well. His story is as intricate, poignant and inspiring as any film could be.
